Andre de Ruyter served as Eskom CEO from January 2020 to March 2023. On 12 December 2022 — one day after submitting his resignation — he was poisoned with cyanide placed in his coffee at Eskom's Megawatt Park headquarters. He survived after emergency medical treatment. A coffee machine technician subsequently absconded. The attempted murder is believed linked to his efforts to root out corruption at Eskom.
