Former Speaker of the National Assembly and longest-serving post-apartheid Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula was arrested in April 2024 and charged with 12 counts of corruption and one count of money laundering. She allegedly solicited and received R4.5 million in bribes (R2.1 million in cash) from defence contractor Nombasa Ntsondwa-Ndhlovu between December 2016 and July 2019 while serving as Minister of Defence. She resigned as Speaker the day before her arrest. Released on R50,000 bail. Trial set for July 2026.
