Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality, covering the town of Zeerust in the North West, has become a flashpoint for the province's governance crisis. The municipal manager was arrested on fraud charges related to financial mismanagement, joining a growing list of senior municipal officials in the province facing criminal proceedings.

Community frustration boiled over when gunshots were fired at the municipal offices during protests over the non-delivery of basic services. Residents have endured prolonged periods without water, uncollected refuse, and deteriorating roads. The municipality has been declared under financial distress, yet no meaningful intervention has followed.

The arrest of the municipal manager, while a rare moment of accountability, has not translated into improved services. Acting appointments and political infighting have further paralysed the administration. Water supply remains irregular, with some areas going days without supply. The municipality lacks both the financial resources and the institutional capacity to recover without significant external support.
