Umzumbe is a rural local municipality on KwaZulu-Natal's south coast, inside the Ugu District whose sewage collapse is already recorded here. On 13 September 2024 the President gazetted Proclamation 183 of 2024 authorising the Special Investigating Unit to investigate seven streams of procurement at the municipality from 1 January 2013: the construction of its municipal offices; the rehabilitation of six rural roads; the Isipofu access road; the Ntelezi Msani Heritage Centre; the Nkanini Indoor Sports Centre; the Ntatshana access road and bridge; and the three-year electrification turnkey project of 2015–2018.

On 10 July 2026 the President amended the proclamation (327 of 2026) to correct the Nkanini tender number and extend the investigation window to the date of amendment. No contract values or individuals have been published; the municipality said it "will cooperate with the investigation and assist the SIU in any way it can."
