Following explosive allegations by KZN police commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi about criminal infiltration of the police, Parliament established an Ad Hoc Committee to investigate. Its draft report (28 May 2026) found a "serious institutional crisis" in the South African Police Service.

The committee concluded that the December 2024 directive disbanding the Political Killings Task Team was issued without consulting the President, the National Commissioner or the NPA. It found businessman Katiso "Cat" Matlala "not credible" — a participant in the events rather than a victim. The report was due to be finalised by 12 June 2026, running in parallel with the Madlanga Commission, which resumed on 1 June 2026.
