The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) distributes proceeds of the national lottery to "good causes" — sports, arts, charities and community projects. Over several years investigators have traced roughly R2 billion in grant funds allegedly diverted through non-profit organisations that were hijacked or created as fronts, with money flowing to officials, intermediaries and connected individuals rather than intended beneficiaries.
The matter has been slow to produce consequences. After the Hawks and SAPS failed to attend a scheduled parliamentary briefing on 24 March 2026, Parliament's oversight committee summoned them again, with a briefing on progress scheduled for 30 June 2026.
