Advocate Shamila Batohi served as the first woman National Director of Public Prosecutions, appointed by President Ramaphosa on 4 December 2018 and taking office on 1 February 2019. Tasked with rebuilding the NPA after a decade of capture. Established the Investigating Directorate (ID) in 2019 to pursue state capture cases; that ID was upgraded to the permanent Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) in August 2024 via the NPA Amendment Act 10 of 2024. Her 7-year term ended on 30 January 2026.
