Advocate Jan Lekgoa Mothibi — known publicly as Andy Mothibi — is the current National Director of Public Prosecutions, effective 1 February 2026. He began his career as a public prosecutor in Johannesburg and Soweto Magistrates and Regional Courts, later serving as a Magistrate. Before the NPA appointment he was Head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU). His appointment was made directly by the President under section 179(1)(a) of the Constitution and section 10 of the NPA Act 1998 after an advisory panel found none of the interviewed candidates suitable.
