Nhlanhla Nene served as Finance Minister from 2014 until his shock firing by President Zuma on 9 December 2015. He was fired for resisting reckless state spending and specifically for confronting SAA chairwoman Dudu Myeni over an irregular Airbus deal. His dismissal — Nenegate — crashed the rand 5.4% in a day and wiped R169.6 billion from the JSE.
