Andries Tatane was a community activist and mathematics teacher killed by police during a service delivery protest in Ficksburg (Setsoto Local Municipality, Free State) on 13 April 2011. He was shot with rubber bullets at close range and beaten by multiple officers while SABC cameras were rolling. Despite the killing being broadcast live on national television, all officers involved were acquitted in 2013. His death became the most iconic symbol of police brutality against service delivery protesters.
