Minister of Police placed on special leave of absence by President Ramaphosa on 13 July 2025 pending the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. KZN Provincial Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi alleged that Mchunu received payments from a corruption suspect and disbanded the Political Killings Task Team to protect syndicate-linked politicians. Mchunu denies the allegations and cites administrative grounds for disbanding the task team. The allegations remain untested.
